Classic Kodachrome Monday #13

Every Monday, I'll be spotlighting a different classic Kodachrome slide that I've picked up, and trying where I can to detail the who, what, when, where, why, and how (much) of the image:

This Week:

What: Gotham City Street Scene.

Why: This image is something of an ironic "full circle" for me. In the 1980's. my mother took me to see a showing of Alfred Hitchcock's North By Northwest, and I was entranced to see the vivid colorful world of a vibrant New York City landscape as it existed in the late 1950's for much of the early part of the film.  It really gave me my first true appreciation for the vivid look and style of the 1950's.  Thus, it is with a certain chuckle that I can feature an authentic color image of that same place in that same era which has its dominant element featuring none other than the film which gave me such an appreciation for full spectrum of the appearance of Manhattan in this era.  Perhaps one of the cabs in this photo was actually in the background of this motion picture!

When: July or August of 1959.

Where: New York, NY. Likely the most iconic of all the settings I have featured to date.  Radio City Music Hall and New York City are synonymous.  This view looks north on Sixth Avenue just below 50th Street.  The area remains much of the original vibe that it had 55 years ago, as both Radio City Music Hall and the nearby Rockefeller Center remain significant tourist draws in the area.  Sadly, the complementary "Whelan" display sign across the street has become extinct.

Who: Cary Grant's co-star in North By Northwest was Eva Marie Saint, something of a New York native in that she was born across the river in Newark, and grew up near Albany.

How (much): Picked up for $9.99 on ebay.  At the time, I was trying with little success to get some classic New York slides, always being outbid.  Though some of the slides I missed out on were technically superior to this one, I can readily admit that this one does carry a neater personal story for me.
